Stanford University was preparing to add classrooms to a historic building and make it the home base for three research efforts: the Stanford Center for Innovations in Learning, Stanford MediaX, and the Stanford Humanities Lab. For its array of intended purposes, the building needed to support Stanford's commitment to improving the educational process and using technology to facilitate learning.

| When the Van Andel Research Institute came to Steelcase to design lab benches for its 160,000-square-foot facility, Steelcase collaborated closely with architects, designers and scientists to deliver a timeless solution to a persistent problem: To keep pace with rapidly changing needs, the research labs would need to be redesigned every four years, with typical down times of two to six weeks for each reconfiguration. Lab benches had to support heavy test equipment and sustain vibrations. |
